Debt and Credit Counseling

Free. Counseling includes an in-depth, personal review of your debt, income, and expenses by a certified financial counselor. Counseling sessions are available only to residents of California, and can be conducted in person, through the mail, on the phone.

Housing Counseling

Free. There is no charge to meet with a CCCS-OC Housing counselor to discuss ways to prevent foreclosure on your home.

Bankruptcy Counseling & Education

Pre-Filing Bankruptcy Counseling & Certificate

Pre-Filing Bankruptcy Counseling as required by the Bankruptcy Code is offered with the issuance of the required completion certificate. Residents of California may complete counseling online, by phone, or in person at any of the five CCCS-OC locations. The following fees apply:

Bankruptcy filing can be in any California judicial district.

Payment may be made by money order, cashier’s check, or a debit card with the MasterCard® or Visa® logo. Fee may be waived in certain hardship cases.

Pre-Discharge Bankruptcy Education & Certificate – $50 per filer

“Money in Motion” is an approved Pre-Discharge Personal Finance Managment program, as required by the Bankruptcy Code prior to the discharging of debts in a bankruptcy. Filers may complete the program in a CCCS-OC classroom or online.

Bankruptcy filing can be in any judicial district except Oregon, Alabama or North Carolina.

Payment may be made by money order, cashier’s check, or a debit card with the MasterCard® or Visa® logo. Fee may be waived in certain hardship cases. A login number will be assigned to online participants upon receipt of payment.

Debt Management Plan And Education

One-Time DMP and Set-up Fee – $50

Clients choosing to join the Debt Management Plan are charged a one-time fee of $50. This fee includes:

• Better Fortunes education workshop and book is intended to help you change your approach to personal money matters. It will provide you the tools and the knowledge to build a new financial life based on sound financial principals. This is a mandatory class for new DMP participants, and can be taken in person or as self-study course at home. Additional Family members can also take Better Fortunes for $30.
• Free access to all CCCS-OC educational workshops (except for Better Fortunes, Money in Motion or Check Wise).

Monthly DMP Service Fee – $0 to $35

Debt Management Plan participants are charged a monthly service fee equal to 8% of the amount disbursed each month, up to a maximum of $35 per month, whichever is less. $35 is the maximum monthly fee currently permitted by California State law.

*Total costs for each individual will vary based upon their specific needs. These are the only fees charged by CCCS-OC for Debt Management Plan Administration. No clients will ever be asked to make donations or contributions to CCCS-OC to help defray the actual costs of providing counseling or debt management programs. Fees are income-sensitive and no one is ever turned away for services due to inability to pay fees.
